PETER BOGARDUS, Apu
November 15 / January 7, 2001
Curated by Zishan Ugurlu PhD.
We are proud to be opening our fourth exhibition featuring works by the American artist PETER BOGARDUS living and working in New York.
On view are oil on linen and pigment on paper paintings of various sizes. What catches the eye in these paintings are the intriguing surfaces. Like the alchemist of old tradition, Peter Bogardus experiments with the very essential material of his art - the pigment. He understands it not only to be the vehicle of his art but the very subject and inspiration. He knows about the specific character of each pigment and uses it to express just that: the character of the pigments themselves, as he embeds in oils and natural resins.
As his hand is trained in the traditional craft of drawing, figures and landscapes emerge out of the process of applying pigments and media. They seem incidental, like natural unquestioned expressions of thoughts and experiences.
In this case the alchemical transformation of pigment into art was successful and the results are well worth seeing.
Peter Bogardus' sculptures , they are first made in clay, then moulded in sand and cast in bronze. Sculptures express the artist feeling of commonality among humans and beetween creatures.
This is the artist's third solo exhibition in Manhattan. His exhibition record includes current exhibition in Austria, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York Academy of Art, National Academy and Atelier International.
