SERDAR ARAT, Recent Works
September 14 / November 2, 2000

Curated by Zishan Ugurlu PhD

We are proud to be opening our third exhibition featuring works by the Turkish artist SERDAR ARAT living and working in New York since 1980.

Serdar Arat's recent paintings as described by Dominick Lombardi of the New York Times 1999
"...The futuristic paintings and mixed media works portray the future as somewhere between peaceful and puzzling... Mr. Arat's Futurists predecessors were best known for their infatuation with energy, specifically high speed movement, while Mr.Arat turned his attention to a few of the Futurists' other concerns; atmosphere, mood and memory."

As art critic Bill Arning observed in Serdar Arat's most recent catalog "... Mr. Arat is a Turkish painter of tremendous power and ability. His Installation of dark, arch – shaped canvases suggested an ominous temple of the future or an environment from 2001, A Space Odyssey."
Yet the imagery is not purely high – tech; the paintings also make references to the intensely private works of 19th century artists like Redon and the symbolists.

This is the artist's third solo exhibition in Manhattan. His extensive exhibition record includes the
Bronx Museum, White Columns, Alternative Museum, M – 13, Hal Katzen, Pierogi 2000, Europe – Asia Biennial in Ankara Turkey, Sotheby's London, and many others in New York, Istanbul,
Chicago, as well as other cities in the USA, Belgium and Turkey.
