LEIF & KATHERINE NILSSON, Drawn By Light
April 25 /August 25, 2002
Curated by Zishan Ugurlu PhD.
The Gallery at the Marmara- Manhattan is pleased to announce an extraordinary exhibition of the oil paintings and watercolors by American artists Leif & Katherine Nilsson.
When Monet and Pissaro were in London, at June 1871, Pissaro wrote a letter to Theodere Dunet, the art critic “Monet and I were very enthusiastic about the London Landscapes. Monet worked in the parks, while I, living in Lower Norwood, studied the effect of fog, snow and springtime. We worked from nature…The watercolors and paintings of Turner and Constable have certainly had an influence on us. We also visited the museums. We admired Gainsborough, Reynolds, Lawrence...” Pissaro and Monet were mostly struck by the landscapes painters who shared more in their aim with regard to “plein-air” painting, light and fugitive effects.
Leif Nilsson who is a “plein-air painter” also admired primarily the French 19th and early 20th.century painters. His heroes are Bonnard and Monet for color, Pissaro and Vuillard for composition and Van Gogh for energy. His work is represented by Galleries in California, Florida, New York and Connecticut. He has a large following of loyal collectors nationwide.
Katherine Nilsson is inspired by the American and European Impressionists for their color and sense of light, as well as the post impressionists and early modernists for their use of pattern and unique composition. She also admires the belle-époque illustrators for their ability to convey story through image. Her paintings reflect the color, patterns and rhythms of the places she has been. She experience and internalize a place by sorting out rhythms and colors through painting.
Both artists enhanced their education with several sojourns to Europe, Scandinavia and Asia Minor. Currently Nilsson’s have been showing in selected galleries and art associations while they have been promoting their work on the internet and in their own studio-gallery. To enjoy beautiful New England and European Landscapes, featuring views of Italy, France, Spain as well as river and townscapes from the Connecticut River Valley and their beloved town of Chester, CT, you can browse through the their site
