Markus Hirnigel - Space Divided / Time Shared

The Gallery is delighted to announce Markus Hirnigel's first solo exhibition at The Marmara-Manhattan. Hirnigel started his work as a photographer in 1995 by taking pictures of actors and artists in London and later in New York. Soon after he began to photograph productions for various New York theatre groups, The Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall.

In the winter of 2004, he began to work on a serious of cityscapes of the U.S. and Argentina, which are shown in this exhibit.

He says, "Working on this project was to reveal the geometric forms and colors in urban structures disconnecting them form their actual function. I seek look past the structures' mere forms and search for their history."

Hirnigel, finds poetry revealing the rich shades in the architectural detail or most especially architecture set within a landscape. The viewer sometimes walks on the footprints of Harry Gruyaert or Raymond Depardon. In a single glance his images provide us with an attunement of color, light, shadow, texture and mood that approaches the mysterious. The camera sometimes fixes an instant in which objects appear to live in two different realities.

He was born in Vienna, Austria and lives in New York. Markus Hirnigel continues to work for performance artists and collaborates with young fashion designers to create an image for their design.
