MARJORIE WEISS
The Tales of Chestertown

Opening Reception:

The Gallery at the Marmara - Manhattan is pleased to announce an extraordinary exhibition of paintings by American artist Marjorie Weiss.

As artist said “for several years I have been working on a series of paintings that began with a drawing of a dog, his back to the viewer, pensively looking across the water. This image, Black Dog in Chestertown came to me from a favorite postcard of mine, and since then “Chestertown”, along with “Mr. and Mrs. Logan”, “Wally” and “Joe” have all become familiar names found in the titles of my paintings. In each painting, I use images that are both detached and engaging at the same time. Searching for an uneasy juxtaposition, the dark, silhouetted images adrift in the bold, brightly colored landscapes allow cryptic and enigimatic messages to emerge. A story begins to evolve, but is never completely told.”

Her figures float across the canvas, carried by memories, inspired by an old advertising postcard “intended to be a curious and intriguing story that evokes feelings of mystery and enigma.” Simple only in their outlines, the figures freely chase or are chased by their dogs. They lead each other through landscapes distilled to their essence: clear blue skies, rolling green grass, terracotta earth. However fractured the relationship of modern city dwellers may be with our origins, the dogs serve as a bridge to the restoration of a tranquil rapport with nature.

At the core of her work as she said there is a tenuous familiarity and an almost nostalgic lure, while inviting, leaves many questions unanswered.

Marjorie Weiss paintings can be found in many private and public collections across the United States and in Germany including Harvard Business School, St.John’s University, The Institute of Audio Research, Eurart-Marketing, Cologne, Germany, Arthur Strauss, Easthampton, She has exhibited in solo shows in Germany. Weiss is the recipient of two awards. St.John University Purchase Award and The Heckscher Museum. Micropix Award for Excellence.
