ANDREA ARROYO Evidence of Movement Curated by Zishan Ugurlu Ph.D January 31, 2008 - March 9, 2008 The Marmara Gallery is pleased to announce an extraordinary exhibition by Andrea Arroyo, a Mexican born artist living in New York, the official artist of the 7th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. The exhibition includes a survey of work made in the last several years and a series of prints and drawings that center on the idea of celebrating femininity while examining the notions of race, gender and identity. She is known for eternally lyrical, gracefully physical, exquisitely detailed and vibrantly colored mythical female figures. Her distinctive style is inspired in part by the Pre-Columbian and Muralist art of Mexico, and by the artist’s own background in the contemporary dance field. Her art work conveys the strength of women with a sense of well-being and explosive energy. This is the artist’s twenty-third solo exhibition. Her extensive exhibition record includes Latin Collector Gallery, Lehman College Art Gallery, The Mexican Cultural Institute in New York, Jagendorff-Bacchi Gallery, Bridgeport University Gallery in Connecticut, The Museum Gallery in White Plains, and Arthaus Gallery in San Francisco. She was awarded a New York City Citation Award for Achievement in Art, New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships in Artists’ Book and in Sculpture and Outstanding Latina of the Year, among other awards. Her art work is in the collections of The New York Public Library, The National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, The Library of Congress, IBM- New York, Altria – New York and private collections in the US, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and Europe. She has been featured in publication such as The New Yorker (cover art), The New York Times, New York Newsday and The International Herald Tribune. High-resolution images for publication are available upon request. The artist is available for interviews by appointment.
